During a one-week hackathon, we created a professionally designed website with the aim of assisting Atria, a Vancouver-based charity, in addressing the pressing issue of homelessness.

PROBLEM SPACE

Atria, a Vancouver-based charity, is dedicated to solving the poverty crisis by encouraging collaborative efforts among the city’s residents. However, the organization faced a significant barrier: widespread apathy and stigma toward the homeless population. Despite alarming statistics—such as an 11.2% increase in homelessness over the past three years—many Vancouverites felt disconnected from the issue. They struggled to see how they could make a meaningful impact, and the emotional distance between the housed and unhoused populations made collective action difficult.

Atria approached our team during the Eunoia Hackathon with a clear goal: to design a solution that could bridge this gap, foster empathy, and inspire community engagement.

INITIAL OBSERVATIONS
1. Apathy Toward Statistics: Data alone failed to resonate with people. Statements like “homelessness is rising” felt abstract and impersonal.

HOW MIGHT WE

tell the stories of those experiencing poverty in a way that challenges perceptions, builds empathy, and connects Vancouverites to actionable steps?

Connect, empathize & experience

Our solution was Atria Voices, a digital platform designed to humanize the issue of homelessness and provide a clear pathway for community engagement. The platform had two core components:

  1. Storytelling: Atria Voices shared the personal stories of individuals experiencing poverty, highlighting their struggles, resilience, and aspirations. These narratives aimed to challenge stereotypes and foster empathy.

  2. Actionable Pathways: The platform connected users to Atria’s programs and partner organizations, offering tangible ways to get involved—whether through volunteering, donating, or advocating for change.

By combining emotional storytelling with practical calls to action, Atria Voices aimed to transform empathy into engagement.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS

The goal was to present personal stories in a captivating and visually appealing manner, in order to sustain the user's curiosity. The quotes on this page are intended to establish rapport and allowing users to identify with each individual featured in the stories at a quick glance.

At the conclusion of each story, we customize an event that is specific to the individual's personal narrative. Additionally, we make it simple for the user to register for the event by using friendly copy and a minimalistic interface, ensuring a seamless experience.

The Atria Voices project demonstrated the power of design to address social challenges. By centering human stories and providing clear pathways for action, we created a solution that not only resonated with users but also aligned with Atria’s mission to build a more empathetic and collaborative community. This experience reinforced the importance of combining empathy, storytelling, and actionable design to drive meaningful change.

We are thrilled to announce that we secured second place at the Eunoia Hackathon! It was an incredible experience collaborating with Atria, and we are excited to continue working together to develop Atria Voices for the future
